Lynn Burleson is
licensed to practice law in North Carolina. Mr. Burleson is a native of Albemarle, North
Carolina. He was admitted to practice in North Carolina in 1980, after receiving his bachelors degree in 1970 and his Master of Public Administration degree in 1974
from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his J.D.
degree from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1980. Before joining the Raleigh firm of Tharrington Smith, Mr. Burleson served as a district court
judge and was a partner in the law firm of Kilpatrick Stockton. He also has served as an adjunct professor of law
for the Wake Forest University School of Law and High Point University.
Mr. Burleson practices
exclusively in the field of family law. He
is a North Carolina State Bar Certified Specialist in Family Law and is a
past president of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Academy
of Matrimonial Lawyers and a past chair of the national AAML Arbitration
Committee. He serves on the Board of Governors of the national AAML as
a chapter delegate. Mr. Burleson has served as treasurer of the North Carolina
Chapter of AAML. He has served as chair of the Family Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association
and has served on the Board of Governors of the Association. Mr.
Burleson is a diplomate of the American College of Family Trial Lawyers. In 1990, Mr. Burleson was awarded the Distinguished
Service Award from the North Carolina Bar Association for his service to the Family Law Section.
Mr. Burleson
has served as president of both the Twenty-First Judicial District Bar and the Forsyth County Bar Associations.
He has earned the highest AV rating by Martindale-Hubbell and is listed in
The Best Lawyers in America in the area
of family law. He has been listed among the "Legal Elite" by
Business North Carolina magazine and among the "North Carolina Super
Lawyers" by Law and Politics and Charlotte magazines.
Mr. Burleson is a frequent speaker at law schools and
at continuing
legal education programs sponsored by such providers as the North Carolina Bar Foundation and the Wake Forest University School of
Law. He has written and presented manuscripts on a wide range of topics including absolute divorce, divorce from bed and
board, alimony, child support, Rule 11 sanctions, qualified domestic relations orders, employee benefits, discovery of corporate records by minority shareholders, ethics, counsel fees,
mediation, neutral evaluation, use of referees, classification and distribution of marital assets, marital
property valuation, family law contracts, breach of confidential relationships, and arbitration.
Mr. Burleson is certified as an arbitrator by the
American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and as a family financial mediator by the
North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission.
Mr. Burleson has appeared in district and superior trial courts
throughout central and eastern North Carolina and has appeared before the North Carolina Court of Appeals and
Supreme Court in his appellate practice.
