Howard L. Gum is licensed to practice law in North
Carolina. Mr. Gum limits his practice to matters involving Family and
Matrimonial Law. His office is located in Asheville, North Carolina, but he
accepts selected cases in the several counties and Judicial Districts
comprising greater Western North Carolina.
Mr. Gum was admitted to practice in North Carolina in
1976 after receiving his Bachelor’s Degree,
Cum Laude,
from Bradley University in 1973 and his J.D. Degree from the University of
Illinois in 1976. He practiced for approximately two years with the well
established Asheville firm of Van Winkle, Buck, Wall, Starnes, & Davis,
P.A., and in early 1979 formed the firm of Gum and Hillier, P.A., with his
partner, David R. Hillier, now Gum, Hillier, and McCroskey, P.A.
Mr. Gum is certified as a Specialist in Family Law by the
North Carolina Board of Legal Specialization. He is a past member of the
Ethics Committee of the N.C. State Bar. Mr. Gum has served two terms as
Chair of the Family Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association, and,
in addition thereto, has served several terms on the Family Law Section
Council and on various committees of the North Carolina Bar Association. He
has recently been elected to serve another three year term on the Family Law
Section Council. Mr. Gum has also served as a Committee Member on Committees
of the Administrative Office of the Courts having been appointed thereto by
the Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, including several
years on the Family Courts Advisory Committee of the Administrative Office
of the Courts. For six years, he was Chair of the Family Law Specialty
Committee of the North Carolina Board of Legal Specialization. He served on
the Board of Legal Specialization from 1996 until 2002 including terms ad
Vice Chair and Chair of the Board.
Over the years, Mr. Gum has served in various other
capacities with local and state professional associations. He is also listed
in Best Lawyers in America in the Family Law Category.
Mr. Gum is currently the State Bar Councilor for the 28th
Judicial District and serves on various committees of the North Carolina
State Bar, including the Grievance Committee.
Mr. Gum was elected a Fellow in the American Academy of
Matrimonial Lawyers in 1992. He is Past President of the North Carolina
Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (2006/2007) having
been one of the Charter Members of the North Carolina Chapter.
