Mark
E. Sullivan was admitted to practice law in Ohio in 1971 and in North
Carolina in 1976. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law. Before entering private
practice in 1978, he served as a JAG officer in the Army for four years, and he is a
retired colonel in the Army Reserve
with over 30 years of commissioned service. He practices with Law Offices of
Mark E. Sullivan, P.A., in Raleigh.
Mr. Sullivan has limited his trial practice to family
law since 1981, and he was recognized as a Family Law Specialist in
1989 by the North Carolina State Bar's Board of Legal Specialization. He has also been trained and certified
as an arbitrator by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of
Matrimonial Lawyers. He is past president and currently serves on the Board of
Examiners of the North Carolina Chapter of the AAML. He has
served as the Vice-chair of the North Carolina Bar Association's Family Law Section and as the Chair of the Military
Committee of the American Bar Association's Family Law Section. He was a member of the Governor's Advisory
Commission on Military Affairs from 1985 to 1991, and he received the Secretary of Defense Certificate of
Appreciation for Outstanding Public Service in August of 1988 for his work as Chairman of the ABA LAMP (Legal
Assistance for Military Personnel) Committee. In 2002, upon his
retirement from the Army Reserve, Sullivan was awarded the Legion of Merit
as "the Army's foremost expert in family law." He is the
chairman of the Military Committee of the American Bar Association's Family
Law Section.

frequent lecturer at legal education seminars, Mr. Sullivan has spoken at programs
of the American Bar
Association, the North Carolina Bar Association, the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, Wake Forest University
Law School, Campbell University Law School, the U.S. Army JAG School, the
Naval Justice School, the North Carolina Association of Certified
Public Accountants and numerous other organizations. His topics range from those involving family law
(alimony, custody, divorce, property division, child support, military pension division, paternity and adoption) to
those about law practice management, negotiating skills, law office technology and trial practice. He has
written over 70 articles on these topics. He is also the editor of the Family Law Formbook, published
by the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, as well as the editor of the military pension division chapter of QDRO's,
EDRO's and Retirement Benefits, published by Michigan's Institute for Continuing Legal Education.
