Martial arts generally refer to self defense fighting from the Far East, from places like China, Japan and Korea. Martial arts are a big hard to define, and many cultures have systems of unarmed combat, which is what Martial arts usually are. There are many reasons or ways to use martial arts. The most common is self defense or combat. They can also be used for physical fitness, and as a competition. Some say they can be used for mental and spiritual development, and even for entertainment purposes.

Unarmed martial arts for self defense can be divided into two main forms, or categories, which is striking and grappling. Striking can be used for defense, as well as for attacking, and includes punching and kicking in most cases. Boxing, Takdwondo, Karate and Muay Thai are just a few in this discipline. The grappling is perhaps more defensive oriented, and involves throwing a person down, putting them in a hold to get submission, and various pinning techniques. Judo, Jui-Jitsu, Wrestling and Akido are examples.

Many Asian martial arts also teach health and fitness aspects along with self defense. Going through the motions of many martial arts are good workouts, and help retain muscle memory if they are ever needed for self defense. Sometimes traditional medicine, such as herbalism, are also taught.

Another form involves the spiritual aspects, or even an art form. Some systems were taught by monks of the Hindu or Buddhist philosophy. The disciplines of the martial art can help focus the mind and spirit, and are said to aid in enlightenment. Japanese styles also have this aspect. Aikido is one example from Japan. Korean Taekwondo focuses on the value of inner peace and that is a significant part of the discipline. There is also the art of Systema, which is a Russian Orthodox form, that works toward self conscience and calmness in addition to having strong defensive techniques.

Security Guards and Martial Arts Training

Krav Maga – Originally for the Isreal Defense Forces (IDF), has become a worldwide fighting style. Similar to American Mixed Martial Arts fighting, but deadlier and not to be taken lightly.
SPEAR – A system designed for close quarter combat that utilizes flight or fight techniques to help with self defense. Both are actively used in many security guard training courses across the country, and internationally.
S.C.A.R.S – This is a military training, however, anyone can utilize this training and many security companies have requested their employees to take this training.

Many police officers I know have trained in Krav Maga, Danzan Ryu jujitsu, Brazilian jiu jitsu, and judo. They are excellent candidates to join my Aikido program, and learn techniques to change aggressive movements of an attack, resulting in a throw or joint lock that yields the aggressor into submission. There are several main attacks that Aikido trains to defend against. Each of these is often encountered in an enforcer role, such as that of a security guard, police officer, or military patrol. These attacks include: front and side of the head strikes, chest thrusts, and face punches. The taninzudori, or taninzugake, is an Aikido defense maneuver when dealing with multiple attackers. This takes much mental training, as well as the physical strength, smoothness of movement, and keen reaction time.

For security guards, police officers and military personnel, I recommend training in multiple martial arts disciplines. Krav Maga is a good all-around start to street-fight defense. This should be followed by jujitsu, to take your training to the ground so you are prepared for a grapple. Judo is a good followup as you will learn to throw your opponent and distance yourself from trouble. All this defensive should be mastered by introducing Aikido into your skill-set, as an Aikido practitioner (or aikidōka) will learn to take all they have learned and translate into a powerful sense of self-awareness and control over your body, as well as your attackers. Aikido aims to not only protect you in an altercation, but also to protect your attacker from injury. This skill is great for one to have before they go for a security guard card, police commissioning, or military assignment.

Martial Arts teach discipline, respect and control. Other things that Martial Arts can help someone with is humility and social skills. However, the main reason for martial arts is self defense.

What Does Martial Arts Training Do For You?

Martial arts training is something that you must get when you want to learn how to defend yourself. You can see people fighting in movies, but they learned how to do martial arts so that they could take care of themselves in a scary situation. Men and women can both get the training in a lot of different places, but you need to be sure that you have chosen the right kind of art. Some of the martial arts are all about grappling, and some of the others are all punches and kicks.

Martial Arts Training Teaches Defense

All the things you learn in the beginning are going to allow you to focus as much as possible. You learn to how to block people who are attacking you, and you learn how to get out of situations that are not safe. The training continues with punches and kicks you can throw to harm your opponent, but the idea is to get away from them as soon as possible. No one started the study of the martial arts to harm anyone. You are learning to be as efficient as possible.

Martial Arts Training Teaches Efficient Fighting

You will learn how to end and encounter so that you and your opponent are not injured. This is not like fighting you see on TV. You are trying to stun your opponent or grapple them so that they tap out. You could study arts that teach you how to use your leverage, and you could take down someone who is much larger than yourself pretty easily. That also means that women who are very small will learn a way to deal with male attackers.

The Length of Martial Arts Training

You need to make sure that you have studied martial arts for a long time to improve your skills as much as possible. You need years to get it right, and lots of practice to make sure you can use it well.
